Isaiah 28:16        Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation.

The reference to the cornerstone refers to the foundation and standard upon which a building was built or constructed.  Once in place, the building could be established.  If removed, the entire structure could collapse.  Sadly, this cornerstone was rejected by the builders (Psalm 118:22).  Peter used this reference in Acts 4:11, saying ‘This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.’  Paul also referenced this name for Jesus in Ephesians 2:19-20.  For people living in that society, it gave an indication in the early days of the church of the importance of building their lives into Jesus.  For us today, this becomes even clearer, as we can see how Jesus was and is still today the foundation of the Church as well as the foundation of each individual Christian life.  This reference to cornerstone speaks of the chief role.  Still today this cornerstone is a stumbling block to many, as they continue to reject him but the firmest of rock foundation for those who come to know Him and build their lives on Him.
