Bread of Life

John 6:48  I am the bread of life.

Jesus told His followers, that just as their fathers had eaten manna in the wilderness, He was the living bread which had come down from heaven.  ‘If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world’ (John 6:51).

This reference was not just a figure of speech.  Jesus meant the words literally.  At the Last Supper the night before He died, He held bread in His hands and said to His friends, ‘This is my body that is for you.  Do this in remembrance of me’ (1 Corinthians 11:24).  Christians have celebrated this breaking of bread since to remember what Jesus accomplished as His body was broken for humanity.  This living bread, or Bread of Life, sustains us and prepares us for a future day when we will come to the heavenly banquet table.  John 10:10: ‘I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.’
